Shopify vs WooCommerce for a growing store

Both platforms run successful stores of every size. The better choice depends less on features and more on who will look after the store, how much control you need, and how your costs behave as sales grow.

The short answer

Choose Shopify if you want to focus on selling and are happy to pay a monthly fee for hosting, security and updates to be handled for you. Choose WooCommerce if you already run WordPress, want full control over the code and data, or need custom features that Shopify apps don't cover well.

Who maintains the store

Shopify is hosted: there's no server to manage, and core updates happen without you. WooCommerce runs on your own hosting, so someone has to update WordPress, WooCommerce and every plugin, take backups and watch security. If you don't have that person, budget for a maintenance plan.

How costs grow

Shopify costs are a monthly plan plus paid apps, and in countries where Shopify Payments isn't available, including India, an extra transaction fee on third-party gateways that falls on higher plans. WooCommerce itself is free, but you pay for hosting, premium plugins and developer time. Small stores often find Shopify simpler; stores with many custom needs often find WooCommerce cheaper over time. Check current pricing on each platform before you decide.

Customisation and control

WooCommerce can be changed at code level, so unusual pricing rules, B2B features or integrations with local systems are usually possible. Shopify customisation happens through themes, apps and its APIs, which covers most needs but has limits, especially around checkout on lower plans.

Content and SEO

If content marketing is central, with a large blog, guides and landing pages, WooCommerce benefits from living inside WordPress. Shopify handles product SEO well and has a basic blog, but heavy content sites are usually easier on WordPress. Both can rank well when set up properly.

Moving later

Migration in either direction is possible: products, customers and order history can be moved, and old URLs redirected. It's a real project, though, so it's worth choosing carefully at the start.

Quick checklist

  • Do you already run WordPress? Leaning WooCommerce.
  • No technical person in the team? Leaning Shopify.
  • Unusual pricing, B2B or deep integrations? Leaning WooCommerce or custom.
  • Want to launch fast with minimal upkeep? Leaning Shopify.
